Charlie Lima Echo Lightweight Sweatshirt
This design is named Charlie Lima Echo, in reference to the International Maritime Code of Signals.
Even with today’s advanced satellite communication, the U.S. Navy continues to use the International Signal Flags for visual signaling. In order to maintain radio silence, Signalmen hoist the various alphabet flags, numeral pennants, and special flags on a halyard to transmit messages to other vessels. Each side of a ship is equipped with a full set of signal flags to ensure visibility.
There are multiple methods by which these flags can be used as signals. Our Navy has unique signals used among other U.S. Navy or allied forces, but the principal system of flags and associated codes is the International Code of Signals (ICS). The fundamental function of the International Code of Signals is to provide ways and means of universal communication for safety of navigation related situations. Each flag has a standard name, and a series of them can be used to spell out a message. For example, the flags on THIS shirt spell out “Charlie Lima Echo” or “CLE”. Every individual flag also has a specific meaning, and one or more flags also form code words. For example, the Lima Charlie flags together translate as Loud and Clear.
